War & Child Violence

Home Up

In the world children is only the picture, which shows us the real scene of the war, in each and every war children suffered lot so far, with war in IRAQ dominating our thoughts over the last year. Children is precious than OIL and power, we should not forget the impact such wars have on children. War is recognized as the greatest man made threat to the well being of children. Between 1985 and 1995, an estimated two million children have been killed during wars.

In INDIA the riots of Gujarat, it is known as GODHRA RIOTS, at least five thousands of children were killed very brutally, some children escaped from the coach and anarchy, but they were not in position to tell the story. Children lost their parents, Brothers and sisters, also now, they hadn't their own houses, this is we called civilization or reformations. In refuses camp, I fond that many children were wondered in search of their parents, they were very little, this made my heart weep, I was stand against them speechless, their tears asking me again and again what is our fault.

In Northern Uganda where the Lords Residence Army (LRA ) utilize brutal tactics of abducting children and forcing them in to fighting their own people, many escape from the clutches from the Army and some of their story of the viciousness and violence forced upon them made me in thought. GP desparately wanted to help them.

In the late 1990's, I read the report of the west bank and Gaza strip, I wrote and appeal both of the governments to stop this kind of war where thousands of the children are killing every month, and many children become orphans everyday. I also saw the pictures of the child trauma project. I wish at that time that leaders involved in the on-going conflict could also listen to them and hear how war is deeply affecting their daily lives. One child had been deeply disturbed by a raid on his home in the middle of the night and daily bombings and shootings. he may never be able to talk again.

In Sierra Leone, since 1991 civil war between the governments and the Revolutionary United Front ( RUF) has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of more than 2 million people, many of whom are now refugees in neighboring country. After several setbacks, the end to the eleven years conflict in Sierra Leone may finally be near at home.

In Afghanistan ,twenty years of brutal conflicts, three years of several drought, large scale human right abuse, and significant population movements spurred most recently by the present geo-political crises have left more than 5 millions civilian, the vast majority of them women and children, with the fragile grip on survival . According to UNICEF, nearly 20% of those in need are children under the age of five.

The influx of Afghan refuges into Pakistan reached staggering proportions in late 2001, many children arrived starving, travel wearily and ill, and needed the help of relief workers in Pakistan. Balochistan, one of the largest and the poorest province of Pakistan, received more than 159 000 refugees.

"Armed conflict kills and maims more children than soldiers"
(Graca Machel Report 1996)

FACT FILE

The numbers are almost too big to absorb, in the last decade alone more than two million children have been killed through conflicts, six millions have been injured or displaced from their homes, and 12 millions made homeless. (FIGURES FROM THE UN)

Yet children are not only passive victims of gun violence:38 percent in conflict zones are thought to carry a gun. At any one time, at least 3000,000 children under the age of 18 are actively fighting alongside adults in governments forces, rebel opposition groups and guerrilla armies. in many cases, for example in Uganda, rebel groups are renowned for kidnapping children: boys as child soldiers, girls as sex slaves. Child soldiers are not a new phenomenon, the proliferation of small arms, which are light to carry and easy to use, has made children more vulnerable to being recruited to wage war. Any programme of action to end the use of child soldiers must address the issue of small arms and their flow. Just as efforts to control small arms must address how and by whom these weapons are used.

Many arms transfers are organized by brokering agents-middlemen who organize arms transfers by bringing together private buyers, sellers, transporters, and financiers and insure to make a deal. These middlemen provide weapons to buyers. for example rebel forces, who would find it difficult to procure arms through more so-called traditional or orthodox means. Often the broker's don't reside in the country from which the weapons originate, nor do they live in the countries through which the weapons pass or for which they are destined.

This means that such arms brokers, and the private companies they use, are notoriously difficult to trace, monitor and control. Brokers are also adept at finding loopholes in banking operations, which allow them to launder the proceeds from their arms deals. Further encouragement comes from the ease with which companies can be established and dissolved in many countries, particularly those with offshore tax-haven facilities.

In the light of both the immediate and the lasting effects that arms proliferation has on children's lives, state have a responsibility to effectively control the flow of weapons. This is especially true in conflict zones and areas of regional instability. Curbing the responsible arms brokering activities of individuals or companies is a vital pert of international efforts to build security and a more peaceful world.
